Protista are a diverse group of eukaryotic organisms that are not classified as plants, animals, or fungi, and are single-celled or multi-celled and can be found in aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Most protists have a nucleus and other organelles like mitochondria, chloroplasts, and Golgi bodies. Many protists reproduce both sexually and asexually through methods such as binary fission or budding. Some protists are autotrophic while others are heterotrophic; some even form symbiotic relationships with other organisms. Protists play an important role in the food web by consuming bacteria and algae, providing energy for higher level consumers like fish. They also help to cycle nutrients throughout the environment by breaking down organic matter into simpler components that can be reused by other organisms.
