At St Stephens Church, St Albans, this lectern, a fine specimen of 15th century
At St Stephens Church, St Albans, this lectern, a fine specimen of 15th century Flemish metal work, has been standing for over 400 years. It is claimed by the city of Edinburgh, basing its claim on the supposition that it was taken from the Abbey at Holyrood by Sir Richard Lee, an officer of the Earl of Hertford, who was entrusted by Henry VIII to destroy Edinburgh in 1544. St Stephens suggest that the lectern was the gift of the Bishop of Dunkeld, Abbot of Holyrood, early in the 16th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of a remarkable piece of history. Standing proudly at St Stephens Church in St Albans, this exquisite lectern is a true testament to 15th century Flemish metal work. Its enduring presence for over four centuries is awe-inspiring. Interestingly, there is an intriguing dispute surrounding the origins of this magnificent lectern. The city of Edinburgh claims it as their own, suggesting that it was taken from the Abbey at Holyrood by Sir Richard Lee during the destructive events orchestrated by Henry VIII in 1544. On the other hand, St Stephens Church proposes an alternative theory; they believe that this precious gift was bestowed upon them by the Bishop of Dunkeld, who also served as Abbot of Holyrood in the early 16th century. Regardless of its origin story, one cannot deny the sheer craftsmanship and intricate detailing exhibited in every inch of this eagle lectern. Its elegant design adds a touch of grandeur to any space it graces. This monochrome photograph transports us back to the 1920s when Alfieri expertly captured its splendor. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded not only of its historical significance but also its role within religious practices. A symbol steeped in tradition and faith, this lectern serves as a reminder that even amidst changing times, some things remain steadfast and eternal – just like our devotion to religion and spirituality.
