Sir Francis Drake, English explorer
Sir Francis Drake (c.1540-1596), English explorer and pirate. He was the second man to circumnavigate the globe. After earning his fortune plundering Spanish ships in the Caribbean, Drake was sponsored by Queen Elizabeth I to lead an expedition to the Pacific (1577). The fleet was battered by storms in South America, but Drake continued alone in the Golden Hind, robbing Spanish vessels as he went. Within 3 years he had crossed the Pacific, rounded Africa and returned to England, where he was knighted in spite of Spanish demands for his punishment. He earned further distinction for helping to defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the legendary Sir Francis Drake, an English explorer and pirate who left an indelible mark on history. Born around 1540, Drake became renowned as the second man to successfully circumnavigate the globe. His audacious exploits included plundering Spanish ships in the Caribbean, amassing a considerable fortune. In 1577, Queen Elizabeth I sponsored Drake's ambitious expedition to the Pacific. Despite facing treacherous storms in South America that battered his fleet, Drake persevered alone aboard his ship named Golden Hind. Along his perilous journey, he fearlessly raided Spanish vessels with impunity. Within three years of setting sail, Drake accomplished what seemed impossible at that time – crossing the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, rounding Africa's Cape of Good Hope, and triumphantly returning to England. In recognition of his remarkable achievements and defiance against Spanish demands for punishment, Queen Elizabeth I knighted him. Drake further solidified his place in history by playing a pivotal role in defeating the mighty Spanish Armada during their invasion attempt on England in 1588. His strategic brilliance helped secure victory for Britain against overwhelming odds. This colored artwork immortalizes Sir Francis Drake as a dashing figure from the sixteenth century – a sailor adorned with knighthood and known both as an explorer and buccaneer.
