Ouchi illusion
Ouchi illusion. The central circular area of perpendicularly orientated bars appears to move and float compared to the surrounding pattern. The effect is particularly marked when the observer moves relative to the image. It is thought that the circular contour leads to ambiguity as to where the vertical bars terminate, and hence to ambiguity as to its own position. The brain therefore fails to integrate the whole image into a cohesive whole and so our eye movements cause apparent motion

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing Ouchi illusion, a visual phenomenon that challenges our perception of motion and depth. At first glance, the central circular area filled with perpendicularly orientated bars appears to be in constant movement, seemingly floating against the surrounding pattern. The effect becomes even more pronounced when we shift our position relative to the image. Experts believe that this optical illusion occurs due to an ambiguity created by the circular contour. Our brain struggles to determine where exactly the vertical bars end within this circular shape, leading to confusion about its own position. Consequently, our brain fails to integrate all elements of the image into a cohesive whole, resulting in apparent motion. The Ouchi illusion is not just a mere trick; it delves into intricate aspects of vision and psychology. It highlights how our eyes can deceive us and how our physiological processes contribute to creating illusory perceptions. This fascinating interplay between visual cues and neural processing has captivated researchers in fields such as neuroscience and physiology for years. Displayed on this print from Science Photo Library, the Ouchi illusion serves as a reminder of how easily our senses can be manipulated and deceived by ambiguous visual stimuli. It invites us to question what we see and explore further into the complexities of human perception beyond what meets the eye.
