Framed Print : Light micrograph of cast iron, DIC
Framed Photos From Science Photo Library
Light micrograph of cast iron, DIC
Light micrograph of cast iron using differential interference contrast (DIC) lighting. Steel & cast iron are made by adding small amounts of carbon to iron. When the carbon level is greater than 4%, discrete flakes or particles of carbon are formed & the steel is classed as cast iron. This specimen is a " spheroidal cast iron" which, as a result of adding 0.04-0.06% magnesium, contains its excess carbon as graphite spheres (brown). The spheres make this cast iron relatively ductile. The smooth red-blue background is ferrite; the grainy areas are pearlite containing tiny spheres of cementite. Magnification: x100

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a light micrograph of cast iron using differential interference contrast (DIC) lighting. Cast iron and steel are created by introducing small amounts of carbon to iron. When the carbon level exceeds 4%, distinct flakes or particles of carbon form, classifying the material as cast iron. The specimen depicted here is known as "spheroidal cast iron" which contains excess carbon in the form of graphite spheres due to the addition of 0.04-0.06% magnesium. These brown spheres contribute to the relative ductility of this particular type of cast iron. The background appears smooth and red-blue, representing ferrite, while grainy areas indicate pearlite containing minuscule cementite spheres. This intricate composition provides insight into the alloy's structure and properties under magnification at x100. Science Photo Library presents this remarkable image that delves into various aspects such as chemistry, compounds, graphite formation, light micrographs, alloys like pearlite, differential interference contrast techniques used for imaging specimens like ferrite in detail.
