Framed Photos From Science Photo Library
Leaf structure, SEM
Leaf structure. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freeze-fracture through a seedling leaf. The top of the leaf is at bottom. The fracture has revealed the size of the plant cells (round, some damaged) relative to the thickness of the leaf. Palisade parenchyma tissue is brown and spongy parenchyma tissue is green. This seedling is a dicot, which means that it has two cotyledons (the embryonic leaves of a seed). The leaves of a plant contain the chlorophyll by which a plant harnesses the energy of sunlight, using it to make food in the process called photosynthesis. Magnification: x115 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate leaf structure of a seedling in stunning detail. Taken using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), this coloured micrograph provides a unique perspective on the anatomy of plants. The freeze-fracture technique used to capture this image has revealed the size and arrangement of plant cells within the leaf, with some cells appearing round and slightly damaged. The brown-colored tissue seen here is known as palisade parenchyma, while the green tissue represents spongy parenchyma. These tissues play vital roles in photosynthesis, which is how plants convert sunlight into food by utilizing chlorophyll present in their leaves. It's worth noting that this particular seedling belongs to a dicot species, meaning it possesses two cotyledons or embryonic leaves. This distinguishing characteristic sets it apart from monocots, which typically have only one cotyledon. With a magnification level of x115 when printed at 10cm wide, this photograph allows us to appreciate the complexity and beauty found within nature's smallest structures. It serves as a reminder of both the incredible diversity and delicate balance that exists within our botanical world.
