Leaf pores, SEM
Leaf pores. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of stomata (holes) on the surface of a leaf. These structures perform a similar function to the pores in human skin, allowing water to pass out of the leaf. They also act like lungs, allowing carbon dioxide and oxygen (found in air) to pass into and out of the leaf. The stomata can be opened and closed depending on the conditions and the need to retain water. Water and carbon dioxide are combined in photosynthesis to produce sugars (transported around the plant in veins, one seen, brown) and oxygen (released via the stoma). This is a coriander plant leaf (Coriandrum sativum). Magnification: x465 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of leaf pores, captured through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals an array of stomata, which are small holes found on the surface of a leaf. Resembling the pores in human skin, these structures play a vital role in regulating water loss from the leaf. Additionally, they function as lungs for plants by facilitating the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen with the surrounding air. The stomata depicted here can open and close depending on various factors, including environmental conditions and water conservation needs. Through this dynamic mechanism, plants effectively balance their transpiration rates while ensuring optimal gas exchange for photosynthesis. As sunlight fuels this process, water and carbon dioxide combine within these microscopic openings to produce sugars that nourish the plant's growth. Simultaneously, oxygen is released back into the atmosphere via these stomatal pathways. This particular SEM image focuses on a coriander plant leaf (Coriandrum sativum), revealing its unique anatomical features in stunning detail. With a magnification level of x465 when printed at 10cm wide, every vein and pore becomes visible to our curious eyes. This mesmerizing botanical portrait invites us to appreciate nature's complexity at both macroscopic and microscopic scales – reminding us of how intricately interconnected all living organisms truly are.
