James Dwight Dana, US geologist
James Dwight Dana (1813-1895), American geologist. Dana graduated from Yale University, USA in 1833. In 1847 he devised the geosynclinal theory of the origin of mountains. This proposed that mountains are formed from compressed and folded deposits of sediment. In 1864 he formulated the " doctrine of permanency", which stated that the continents and oceans retain their outline or form over time. The doctrine was later refuted by plate tectonics. In 1843 Dana reported the " probable occurrence" of the metal gold in California

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases James Dwight Dana, a renowned American geologist. Born in 1813, Dana graduated from Yale University in 1833 and went on to make significant contributions to the field of geology. In 1847, he introduced the groundbreaking geosynclinal theory, which proposed that mountains are formed through the compression and folding of sediment deposits. Dana's scientific achievements didn't stop there. In 1864, he formulated the "doctrine of permanency" asserting that continents and oceans maintain their shape over time. However, this doctrine was later disproven by the revolutionary concept of plate tectonics. The photograph also alludes to Dana's involvement in California's gold rush during his career as a geologist. In 1843, he reported on the probable occurrence of gold in California—an observation that would have far-reaching consequences for both science and history. As we gaze at this monochrome portrait capturing Dana's determined expression, we are reminded not only of his immense contribution to our understanding of mountain formation but also his role as an influential figure in shaping geological knowledge during his era. This image serves as a powerful testament to the dedication and intellectual curiosity displayed by scientists like James Dwight Dana throughout history.
