Victor is no silly goose - sorry, gander. That is why he won t go into the pot for Christmas. He has quite an imposing list of jobs to do. For instance he is the knocker up at the Presbytery (where the priests live) attached to St. Gregorys Church, Preston, Lancashire. True he is a very early riser - at dawn he rat-tat-tats with his granite like beak at the Presbytery kitchen door for his breakfast, and into the bargain he awakens the whole household. But as he is a pet nobody chastises him. Sometimes he tries to go too far in his devotion to Monsignor Dunne. On Sunday mornings, unusually well preened for the occasion, he lies in wait for the Monsignor and determinedly follows him to church. This is where the Master has to be firm. There is no place in the church for 6 yr old Victor. He does not like it at all. He can chase about to his hearts desire all over the neighbourhood inquiring into everythings that happens and he can send men carrying buckets of long handled brushed or even cyclists on their way. In fact he is the local boss which is why he takes a very dim view of the church ban. When he sees a line of stalwart worshippers advancing to give help to the Monsignor if necessary Victor realises discretion is the better part of valour. However, all is well that ends well. When the last notes of the church services are dying away Victor flashes with olympic speed 50 yards across to the church to greet one and all. And that happens four or five times every Sunday. Monsignor Dunne admonishes Victor for following him to church. October 1952.
