EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures Princess Victoria of Kent (1819-1901), the heiress presumptive to the throne of England, in the year before her accession. Daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, and Princess Victoria Maria of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Victoria was born on May 24, 1819, at Kensington Palace in London. At the time of this photograph, taken shortly before her 18th birthday, Victoria was not expected to ascend to the throne, as her uncle, King George IV, had a legitimate son, the Duke of York. However, the unexpected death of King George IV in June 1830, followed by the death of the Duke of York just a few weeks later, left Victoria as the next in line to the throne. She was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom and Empress of India on June 28, 1837, at the age of 18. Victoria's reign, which lasted from 1837 to 1901, is considered one of the longest and most significant in British history. During her 63-year reign, she oversaw major political and social changes, including the expansion of the British Empire, the Industrial Revolution, and the Reform Act of 1832. Victoria's personal life was also marked by love and tragedy, including her marriage to Prince Albert and the loss of their children, Albert and Bertie. This photograph, taken in the late 1830s, provides a glimpse into the young woman who would go on to become one of the most influential monarchs in British history. With her regal bearing and confident expression, Victoria exudes a sense of strength and determination that would serve her well in the years to come.
