Suffragette Doll Votes for Women

Suffragette Doll Votes for Women. A Suffragette doll, complete with dress, hat, spectacles, umbrella and little flag, proclaims, Womens suffrage & Rights is our cry. To get them we ll have a good try, so to enter the lobby, Lets bribe some old Bobby. Then the whole bag of tricks we ll defy. Doll appears to be made of papier mache, and, curiously, is wearing a Votes for Women badge in the colours of the Womens Freedom League - Green, Gold and White, But highly unlikely it was something that they produced! Date: circa 1908

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing photograph captures the spirit of the Suffragette movement in a unique and unexpected way. The Suffragette doll, dressed in a papier-mâché body complete with hat, spectacles, umbrella, and a "Votes for Women" flag, boldly declares "Women's suffrage & Rights is our cry." The doll's determined expression and the words inscribed on her sash convey the unwavering commitment of the Suffragettes to secure the right to vote for women. Despite the doll's homemade appearance, she wears a Votes for Women badge in the colors of the Women's Freedom League - green, gold, and white. However, it is highly unlikely that the Suffragettes themselves produced such a doll as a propaganda tool. Instead, it may have been a creative expression of support for the cause by an individual or a small group. The doll's inscription suggests that she and her companions plan to "enter the lobby" and "bribe some old Bobby," likely a reference to bribing the police to gain entry to Parliament to present their demands. The phrase "defy the bag of tricks" may refer to the various tactics used by the police to thwart the Suffragettes' protests and demonstrations. The photograph, which dates back to circa 1908, offers a fascinating glimpse into the Suffragette movement and the creative ways in which people expressed their support for women's suffrage during this period. Despite the challenges they faced, the Suffragettes' determination and perseverance ultimately paid off, and women in the UK gained the right to vote in 1918.
