EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Prince George of Battenberg, the 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven, is seen with his bride, Countess Nadejda Mikhailovna de Torby, at their wedding ceremony. The couple exchanged vows in two distinct ceremonies: the first took place at the Chapel of the Russian Embassy in London on November 15, 1916, followed by the second at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace. Prince George was the eldest son and third child of Princess Victoria of Hesse and Prince Louis of Battenberg. He was an uncle to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Nadejda, the daughter of an exiled Russian Grand Prince, added a touch of Russian nobility to the British royal family. The wedding was a grand affair, attended by numerous dignitaries and members of the royal family. The image captures the couple's joy and happiness as they begin their new life together. George and Nadejda's union was significant as it marked the continuation of the Battenberg family's long-standing connection with the British monarchy. Prince George's parents, Princess Victoria of Hesse and Prince Louis of Battenberg, were themselves of German descent, and during World War I, they were forced to relinquish their titles due to anti-German sentiment. However, their eldest son's marriage to a Russian princess helped to reestablish their position in British society. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of the British monarchy and the complex web of international relationships that have shaped it over the centuries. The image is a valuable historical document, offering a glimpse into the lives of the royal family during a period of significant change.
