EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolour portrait captures the striking likeness of Pritzla Newham, mother of the renowned British military leader and founder of the Scout Movement, Robert Baden-Powell. Painted by Henrietta Grace Baden Powell, nee Smyth (1824-1914), in 1843, the portrait showcases Pritzla in her Victorian-era attire. She is depicted standing in profile, with her head turned slightly towards the viewer, revealing a thoughtful and introspective expression. The artist masterfully employs a muted color palette, with Pritzla's white collar and grey dress standing out against the dark background. Interestingly, Pritzla's association with scouting is not immediately apparent in this portrait. However, her influence on her future son's life is profound. Robert Baden-Powell, who was born in 1857, grew up under his mother's care and was deeply inspired by her strong character and love for nature. He would later incorporate these values into the Scout Movement, which he founded in 1907. The portrait, which was painted when Pritzla was in her early twenties, offers a glimpse into the life of a Victorian woman of the 1840s. Her elegant attire and poised demeanor reflect the societal norms of the time, while her individuality and inner strength shine through in Henrietta Grace Baden Powell's beautiful rendering.
