EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the poignant moment between Estella Havisham, played by Anne St. John, and Pip, portrayed by Ivor Barnard, in David Lean's 1946 film adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic novel, "Great Expectations." Set in the mid-19th century, the story follows Pip, a humble orphan, as he navigates the complexities of love, class, and identity, all under the watchful eye of the enigmatic Miss Havisham. Miss Havisham, portrayed in the film by the legendary Alec Guinness, is a reclusive and eccentric woman who holds a deep influence over Pip. Having been jilted at the altar years ago, she has preserved her wedding dress and the decaying wedding cake, encasing her estate in a permanent state of suspension. In this scene, Miss Havisham, now 61 years old, sits in her dimly lit, cobweb-covered dining room, surrounded by the remnants of her once grand wedding. Estella, her adopted daughter, enters the room, her beauty and elegance a stark contrast to the decay around them. Pip, who has been in love with Estella since they first met, is filled with a mix of longing and trepidation as he approaches her. The image captures the intensity of their interaction, with Estella's cool, detached demeanor and Pip's hopeful, earnest gaze. The shadows and dim lighting add to the sense of mystery and intrigue, drawing the viewer deeper into the story of "Great Expectations." Published in 1861, Dickens' novel has captivated readers for generations with its exploration of themes of love, identity, and the power of expectations. This photograph, taken from Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the rich history of this beloved work and the iconic characters that inhabit it.
