EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image captures the Victims of the First Gas Attack Memorial in Steenstraat, Ieper (Ypres), Belgium. The memorial, standing at an impressive 15 metres high, commemorates the victims of the first gas attack of the First World War, which occurred on 22 April 1915. The attack was carried out by the German army, using chlorine gas against the French troops. An earlier memorial, erected by the French 418th Infantry Regiment in 1929, once stood at this site. Tragically, it was destroyed by the Germans on 8 May 1941. Four years later on that same day, the Germans surrendered, marking the end of the Second World War in Europe. The Cross of Reconciliation, as this memorial is now known, was unveiled on 21 April 2016. The memorial serves as a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and the importance of reconciliation and peace. The cross, with its outstretched arms, symbolizes forgiveness and hope for a better future. The First World War, also known as the Great War, lasted from 1914 to 1918. It was one of the deadliest conflicts in history, with an estimated 10 million military fatalities and 7 million civilian deaths. This memorial honors the victims of the first gas attack, a turning point in the war, and serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of chemical weapons on the battlefield.
