EDITORS COMMENTS
"This print depicts the Skirmish between English and Dutch ships, under the command of Admirlals Robert Blake and Maarten Tromp, which took place on 19 May 1652. Known as the Battle of Dover or Battle of Goodwin Sands, this engagement marked the beginning of the First Anglo-Dutch War (1652-1654). The 17th century was a pivotal time in maritime history, and this print offers a glimpse into the naval warfare of the era. The English and Dutch fleets clashed in the North Sea near the English coast, with Blake's Red and White squadrons engaging Tromp's Blue and White squadrons. The battle took place in the treacherous waters of the Goodwin Sands, making navigation and maneuverability a significant challenge for both sides. Despite the difficult conditions, Blake's forces were able to inflict heavy damage on the Dutch fleet, sinking several ships and capturing others. The English victory was a significant morale boost for the English navy and set the stage for further engagements in the war. This print, created in the 1650s, offers a fascinating glimpse into the naval warfare of the era. The intricate details of the ships, the dynamic poses of the sailors, and the turbulent waters all combine to create a vivid and engaging image of a pivotal moment in maritime history."
