EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Mary Anne Venning for her educational geography book "A Geographical Present being Descriptions of the Principal Countries of the World," published in London in 1818, offers a glimpse into the lives of the Sami people, or Laplanders, of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The image features a man and woman dressed in traditional Sami attire, with the man holding a brace of fish and gesturing towards a man riding a sleigh drawn by a reindeer. The man wears a turban, signifying his connection to the Ottoman Empire, which at the time held territorial claims over parts of Lapland. He is adorned with ermine fur, a symbol of wealth and status. The woman, dressed in a long, flowing dress with pants underneath, also wears a traditional Sami costume. In her hand, she holds a tobacco pipe, a common element of Sami culture. The scene takes place in a snowy landscape, with smoke rising from a nearby dwelling, perhaps a traditional Sami hut or "lavvu." The backdrop of the image suggests a peaceful, rural setting, far removed from the bustling cities of Constantinople or Istanbul. Venning's detailed and accurate depiction of the Sami people and their way of life reflects the growing interest in ethnography and folklore during the Regency and Georgian periods. Her educational writings provided a valuable record of the diverse cultures and traditions of the world, offering a window into the past and preserving the rich heritage of the Sami people for future generations.
