EDITORS COMMENTS
Marguerite de Navarre, also known as Marguerite de Valois and Margaret of France, was a remarkable woman of the Renaissance era. Born in 1523 as the daughter of King Francis I of France, she was a member of the French royal family and a patron of the arts and letters. This handcoloured lithograph, created by Leopold Massard after a portrait in Roger de Gaignières portfolios from Le Bibliophile Jacob aka Paul Lacroix's Costumes Historiques de la France, offers a glimpse into the elegant and refined image of Marguerite de Navarre. Marguerite was known for her intelligence, wit, and literary talents. She was a prolific writer, producing works in various genres, including poetry, prose, and plays. Her most famous work is the Heptaméron, a collection of 72 short stories, which showcases her literary prowess and her exploration of themes such as love, desire, and morality. Despite her royal status, Marguerite led an unconventional life. She was married twice, first to Henry II of Navarre and later to Henry I, Duke of Guise. However, both marriages were unhappy, and Marguerite is believed to have lived much of her life as a virtual prisoner of her husbands. Despite these challenges, Marguerite continued to write and patronize the arts. She was a patron of the Pléiade poets, a group of influential writers who helped shape French literature during the Renaissance. Her support of the arts and her literary achievements earned her a place in French literary history. This beautiful handcoloured lithograph captures the essence of Marguerite de Navarre's refined and elegant persona. With her delicate features, expressive eyes, and elegant attire, she embodies the grace and sophistication of the Renaissance court. Marguerite de Navarre's legacy as a writer, patron, and member of the French royal family continues to inspire and intrigue scholars and enthusiasts of French literature and history.
