EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from John Curtis's seminal work, "British Entomology," specifically Plate 47, which was published between 1824 and 1839. The plate showcases two exquisite Coleoptera, or beetles, belonging to the genus Pogonus. The first species is identified as Pogonus burrellii, now known as Pogonus luridipennis, and the second one is Pogonus sp. (likely Pogonus chalceus). The Burrellian Pogonus, with its vibrant, iridescent green wings and distinctive antennae, is depicted gracefully perched on a delicate stem of Statice limonium, also known as Lavender Thrift. The Statice plant, with its tiny, lavender-hued flowers, provides a beautiful contrast to the beetles' bold colors and intricate patterns. The meticulous detail in this print is a testament to the skill and dedication of the naturalist community during the 19th century. John Curtis, FLS, was a prominent figure in British entomology, and his work, which included over 1,200 plates, played a significant role in advancing the understanding of the natural world during this period. This image not only showcases the stunning beauty of these insects but also highlights the intricate relationship between insects and their plant hosts. The Burrellian Pogonus and the Lavender Thrift are a perfect example of the symbiotic bond between different species in the natural world. This enchanting image is a must-have for any collector of natural history or entomology prints.
