With two Iroquoian captives in tow, Cartier embarks on a mission to reach the Iroquoian capital of Stadacona, located near present-day Quebec City, Canada. Cartier's previous expedition in 1534 had brought him to the shores of the St. Lawrence River, where he had made contact with the indigenous peoples and established a temporary settlement. However, the harsh winter conditions forced him to abandon his post and return to France. Determined to explore further, Cartier sets sail once more, this time with a larger expedition, including several ships and a more diverse crew.
