EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Plee Jr. after an original illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, showcases three distinct species of snakes: the Aesculapian snake (Zamenis longissimus), the grass snake (Natrix natrix), and the South American pond snake (Pseudoryx plicatilis). The Aesculapian snake, also known as the European adder or the collared snake, is a venomous serpent native to Europe. Its distinctive collar pattern is evident in the engraving, making it easily recognizable. The grass snake, on the other hand, is a non-venomous species commonly found in Europe and parts of Asia. Its slender body and olive-green coloration blend seamlessly with the grass, making it an excellent camouflage. Lastly, the South American pond snake, or the water snake, is a semi-aquatic snake native to South America. This snake is depicted with intricate patterns on its body, which helps it blend in with its aquatic environment. This beautiful engraving is taken from Bernard Germain de Lacepede's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, published in Paris in 1825. The meticulous attention to detail in the illustration and engraving process highlights the natural beauty and diversity of these fascinating reptiles.
