US 501st Geronimo Monument, Eerde, Holland

During Operation Market Garden in September 1944, the airborne forces were charged with capturing a series of bridges over waterways that impeded the ground troops advance. In the struggle to the west of Veghel on the Zuid-Willemsvaart Canal, the 501st were involved in hand-to-hand fighting as they struggled to hold open The Corridor, the name given to the road over all the bridges once they had been captured. There are a number of memorials here including this main one which was erected in 1981. It has the colourful badge of the Regiment showing the head of the Apache Geronimo (their battle cry). EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the US 501st Geronimo Monument located in Eerde, Holland, dedicated to the brave soldiers who fought during Operation Market Garden in September 1944. The airborne forces were tasked with securing a series of bridges over waterways to facilitate the ground troops' advance. The 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, in particular, engaged in intense hand-to-hand combat near Veghel on the Zuid-Willemsvaart Canal to maintain "The Corridor," the collective name for the roads over all the captured bridges. The monument, erected in 1981, showcases the colorful badge of the regiment, featuring the head of the Apache warrior Geronimo, symbolizing their battle cry. To the right of the monument, a pillar bears the names of eleven American soldiers, inscribed by William and Thelma McMahon in 1989 as a tribute to their fallen friends. The adjacent mill holds several plaques, including a list of the deceased from the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, dating back to 2001. This poignant memorial stands as a testament to the sacrifices made by these valiant soldiers during one of the most significant battles in World War II history.
