EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures a moment of solemn reflection as King George V (right) pays his respects at the Thiepval Battlefield Cemetery in France during the First World War in 1917. Accompanied by then Governor General of Canada and Commander-in-Chief of the British Army in France, Lord Byng (left), the King takes a moment to reflect amongst the thousands of white crosses that mark the graves of the fallen soldiers. The Thiepval Memorial, located in the Somme region, is the largest British war memorial in the world, dedicated to the 72,195 missing soldiers of the Somme sector who have no known grave. The visit took place during a significant period in the war, as the Battle of Arras was ongoing and the Allies were making gains against the German forces. King George V's visit to the battlefield cemetery was a powerful symbol of solidarity and remembrance for the sacrifices made by the British and Commonwealth forces during the First World War. The King, who had lost his eldest son, Prince George, in the war just a few months prior, would have felt a deep personal connection to the fallen soldiers and the grief of their families. The image of the King and Lord Byng standing amongst the graves serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the importance of remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The photograph is a testament to the historical significance of the First World War and the enduring impact it had on the world.
