EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait of King Edward VIII, painted by the renowned British artist John St. Helier Lander, captures the monarch in the grandeur of his roles as Admiral of the Fleet and Sovereign of The Order of the Garter. Painted in December 1936, just a few months before his abdication from the throne, the image showcases the King in his full regalia, wearing the distinctive red and white robes of the Admiralty and the blue mantle and scarlet velvet cap of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. Edward VIII's reign was marked by controversy and unexpected twists, as he chose to marry the American socialite Wallis Simpson, who was divorced and had two living ex-husbands, against the wishes of the Church and the British people. As a result, he abdicated on December 11, 1936, and was succeeded by his brother, George VI. Despite the short duration of his reign, King Edward VIII left an indelible mark on British history. This portrait, with its intricate details and rich colors, serves as a testament to his regal presence and the grandeur of the monarchy. The painting was created in the same year that Edward VIII became the Duke of Windsor, and it is a reminder of his former status as the monarch of the United Kingdom and the Dominions. John St. Helier Lander (1894-1972) was a prominent British painter, known for his portraits of royalty and other notable figures. His work is held in various public collections, including the National Portrait Gallery in London. This image, with its historical significance and artistic merit, is a valuable addition to any collection of British royal history or art.
