In this stunning handcolored woodcut print, a Japanese nobleman is depicted in the traditional attire of the Chonmage era, which flourished during the Edo period (1603-1868). The nobleman wears a Chonmage hairstyle, characterized by a topknot at the crown of the head, wrapped in a silk band and held in place by a square-shaped metal ornament called Kanzashi. His formal attire consists of a Kamishimo, a two-piece outfit made of silk, and a Kimono, a long robe, both adorned with intricate designs and vibrant colors. The nobleman also wears a Hakama, a traditional divided skirt that is worn over the Kamishimo, and a pair of gloves to protect his hands. He carries two swords, the Katana and the Wakizashi, which were essential weapons for the samurai class. A wide belt, called Obi, holds the swords in place.
