This image depicts James, Duke of York, later King James II of England, engaged in a spirited game of real tennis at the Royal Tennis Court in Whitehall Palace around the year 1640. Real tennis, a precursor to modern lawn tennis, was a popular pastime among the British aristocracy during the 16th and 17th centuries. The game was played indoors on a rectangular court with high walls and a net, using a small, solid ball and various rackets. James, the eldest son of King Charles I, is shown dressed in fashionable attire of the era, including a long, flowing doublet, breeches, and a lace-trimmed collar.
