Fox, wearing a fool's cap labeled "Truant," stands at the center of the classroom, atop a pile of bundled papers. The labels on these papers allude to the numerous controversial episodes that had embroiled him during his absence, including his opposition to the war with France and his role in the impeachment of Warren Hastings. On either side of the room, two prominent figures of the time take their seats. On the left, Henry Dundas, clad in his Scottish tartan, sits with a stern expression. Dundas, the Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, had been a vocal critic of Fox's pacifist stance and had played a key role in his exile.
