EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Alain Gerbault (1893-1941), a French tennis star who left his sporting career behind to pursue a life of adventure on the open sea. Gerbault's transformation from tennis ace to solo sailor is a testament to the restless spirit that drove him to explore the far reaches of the world. In this image, Gerbault is seen standing confidently on the deck of his boat, the Firecrest, as it cuts through the waves of the Pacific Ocean. The year is 1931, and Gerbault was in the midst of his ambitious attempt to become the first person to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe. Born in Paris in 1893, Gerbault was a promising tennis player who reached the quarterfinals of the French Open in 1913. However, the lure of the sea proved too strong, and he soon sold all his possessions to buy a small sailboat and set sail for the Caribbean. Over the next few years, Gerbault honed his sailing skills and explored the waters of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. But it was his daring plan to circumnavigate the globe alone that would make Gerbault a legend. He set out from Bordeaux, France, in 1930, and faced numerous challenges during his journey, including storms, pirates, and mechanical failures. Despite these setbacks, Gerbault persevered, and on March 18, 1931, he became the first person to complete a solo circumnavigation of the globe. Tragically, Gerbault's adventures did not end there. In 1941, during World War II, he was killed in action while defending the island of Bora Bora in the Pacific Ocean. Today, Gerbault is buried on the island, and his grave is a pilgrimage site for sailors and adventurers from around the world. This photograph is a poignant reminder of Gerbault's indomitable spirit and his place in the annals of maritime history.
