EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Elizabeth of Bourbon (1603-1644), the third wife of Philip IV of Spain, who reigned as Queen of Spain from 1621 until her untimely death in 1644. The painting, which is housed in the Meeting Room of the Castilian Monarchs in the Alcazar of Segovia, Spain, offers a glimpse into the regal beauty and grace of this influential queen. Elizabeth was born in Paris, France, as the daughter of Charles, Duke of Mayenne, and Henriette Catherine of Joyeuse. Her marriage to Philip IV was arranged as part of the peace negotiations between France and Spain following the Twelve Years' War. The union was intended to strengthen the political ties between the two European powers, but it was also a love match, as Philip and Elizabeth had met and fallen in love before their marriage. The portrait showcases Elizabeth's striking features, with her dark hair styled in elaborate curls, her piercing dark eyes, and her elegant neck adorned with pearls. Her attire, consisting of a richly embroidered gown and a jeweled collar, reflects her status as a queen and the wealth and grandeur of the Spanish court. Elizabeth's reign as queen was marked by her patronage of the arts, her support of the Jesuits, and her efforts to improve the lives of the poor. She was also known for her intelligence, her strong will, and her devotion to her husband and their children. Tragically, she died at the young age of 41, leaving behind a legacy of love, beauty, and compassion. The Meeting Room of the Castilian Monarchs in the Alcazar of Segovia is a fitting home for this magnificent portrait of Elizabeth of Bourbon. The room, which was used for important meetings and receptions, is adorned with portraits of other Spanish monarchs, making Elizabeth's portrait an integral part of the rich historical tapestry of the Spanish monarchy.
