EDITORS COMMENTS
In this black-and-white sketch, we find Prince Henry, the Duke of Gloucester, captured in a moment of quiet introspection during a sitting granted to the Illustrated London News in 1961. The Duke, born on March 31, 1900, was the grandson of King George V and the cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. At the time of this portrait, he was serving as the Duke of Edinburgh's representative in Australia and New Zealand. The artist behind this evocative rendering was Stephen Ward, an accomplished British portraitist and society figure. Known for his ability to capture the essence of his subjects, Ward was a regular contributor to the Illustrated London News, having sketched several high-profile figures for the publication that year. However, two years later, Ward would find himself at the heart of a scandal that would shake the British establishment to its core: the Profumo Affair. The Profumo Affair, which began in 1963, involved Ward introducing the Secretary of State for War, John Profumo, to Christine Keeler, a model and showgirl. The ensuing scandal, which involved allegations of infidelity, prostitution, and national security breaches, would lead to the downfall of Profumo's political career and cast a shadow over Ward's own reputation. Despite the dark turn of events that would soon unfold, this sketch of the Duke of Gloucester, drawn from life in 1961, remains a testament to Ward's artistic talent and the Duke's regal presence. The image, with its intricate details and nuanced shading, invites us to pause and reflect on a time when the personal lives of public figures were less scrutinized, and the line between the private and public spheres was less blurred.
