EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 158 from John James Audubon's renowned work, "Birds of America," showcases the captivating image of the Chaetura pelagica, commonly known as the chimney swift. This exquisite print, part of the original double elephant folio edition produced between 1831 and 1834, is a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship of the time. The chimney swift is a small, slender bird belonging to the Apodidae family, order Apodiformes, class Sauropsida, and phylum Aves. Its wings, spread wide in this illustration, reveal the distinctive elongated, pointed primaries that enable the swift to fly in a unique, undulating manner, resembling a leaf fluttering in the wind. The chimney swift is known for its affinity for nesting in chimneys, hence its name. The bird's nest, not visible in this print, is constructed of a mass of sticky saliva, which the swifts adhere to the chimney walls. The nest resembles a loose, conical mass of sticks, often extending several inches beyond the chimney opening. This hand-coloured aquatint, engraved, printed, and coloured by R. Havell (& Son) of London, is a stunning representation of the chimney swift in flight. The intricate details of the bird's feathers, beak, and eyes are beautifully rendered, allowing viewers to appreciate the bird's unique features up close. The use of hand-colouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art.
