This evocative photograph captures the moment of triumph for Italian troops as they stand victoriously next to an Austro-Hungarian Albatros C-type biplane, which they had successfully captured at the Italian airfield of Lentiai in northern Italy on 19 May 1917. During the First World War, the skies above the Italian front became a battleground as both the Austro-Hungarian and Italian air forces engaged in aerial combat. The Albatros D.I, a single-seat biplane fighter produced by the Austro-Hungarian aircraft manufacturer Albatros Flugzeugwerke, was one of the most formidable opponents the Italian pilots faced. The Albatros C-type biplane in this image, with its distinctive red and white markings, was a two-seater reconnaissance aircraft. Its open cockpit, exposed propeller, and biplane wings are all clearly visible in this photograph.
