The original manuscript, now housed in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France under the reference number 15397, dates back to the 14th century. The intricately designed alphabet is an exemplary representation of the ornate and artistic style of illuminated manuscripts from the Middle Ages. The Bible of King John, also known as the Bible of Jean de Sy, was created in Paris around 1323-1324. It is believed to have been commissioned by Jean de Sy, a French nobleman, and was likely used for liturgical purposes in a monastery or a royal chapel. The manuscript is renowned for its rich decoration, which includes over 1,200 illustrations and 1,100 initials, all executed in gold and bright pigments. This particular alphabet design is from a series of ornamental plates created by Ernest Guillot and published in his work "Ornementation des Manuscrits au Moyen-Age" (Ornamentation from Manuscripts of the Middle Ages) in 1897. The plates were produced using the chromolithography technique, which allowed for the mass production of high-quality, color reproductions of historical manuscripts.
