EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative portrait, John Harington, 1st Baron Harington of Exton (1561-1613) is depicted in elegant attire, his stern yet thoughtful expression hinting at the weight of responsibility that rested upon his shoulders. The historical figure was a man of great distinction, entrusted by King James I with the guardianship of Princess Elizabeth of Bohemia, the future Queen Consort of Bohemia. Born into an ancient and noble English family, Harington's life was marked by service to the monarchy and the Crown. He was a gifted poet and inventor, best known for his "Royal Water-closet," a precursor to the modern toilet. However, it was his role as the guardian of Princess Elizabeth that would secure his place in history. Princess Elizabeth, the daughter of the childless King James I and his wife, Anne of Denmark, was a valuable political pawn in the complex web of European alliances and power struggles. In 1607, when she was just 13 years old, she was sent to the court of Bohemia to marry the heir to the throne, Prince Frederick. Harington accompanied her as her guardian, ensuring her safety and wellbeing during the long and perilous journey. The portrait captures Harington at a pivotal moment in his life, as he prepared to embark on this important mission. The Princess, who would later become known as the "Winter Queen," would go on to face numerous challenges and hardships during her reign, but Harington's steadfast loyalty and dedication would remain a constant source of support. Tragically, Harington's own life would be cut short. He died in 1613, during the siege of Worms, while serving as an advisor to Frederick. The image of Harington, with his serious expression and steadfast gaze, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in the name of duty, loyalty, and the complexities of European politics.
