EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Wind God 1669" showcases the incredible talent of Italian artist Pietro da Cortona. Created in black chalk and highlighted with white on brownish paper, this artwork measures 7 7/16 x 13 1/8 inches (18.9 x 33.3 cm). Pietro da Cortona, also known as Berrettini, was a renowned figure in the art world during the Baroque period. Born in Cortona, Italy in 1596 and passing away in Rome in 1669, he dedicated his life to studying and perfecting his craft. In this particular piece, we see a youthful depiction of the Wind God appearing at the edge of a central oval shape on a frescoed ceiling. This stunning composition is part of an iconographic program undertaken by Pietro da Cortona for the state rooms of Palazzo Pitti in Florence back in 1641. The room where this artwork is displayed is dedicated to Apollo, representing planet symbolism and virtues required by a prince even into old age. The attention to detail and mastery of technique are evident as Pietro da Cortona brings this mythological deity to life through his skillful use of black chalk. This print from Artokoloro allows us to appreciate not only Pietro's artistic genius but also serves as a reminder that great works like these continue to inspire generations long after their creation.
