Baxter's House, High Street, Kidderminster - Dining Rooms Featured Print

Baxter's House, High Street, Kidderminster - Dining Rooms

Baxter's House, High Street, Kidderminster (not Stourbridge as incorrectly labelled on the card!!) - Dining Rooms. The building was originally the home of the celebrated divine Richard Baxter (1615-1691). He was appointed the minister of St Mary and All Saints' Church in April 1641, after earlier being master of Dudley Grammar School and a priest in Bridgnorth. The fighting of the English Civil Wars erupted soon afterwards and Baxter became a chaplain to the Parliamentary army but he returned to Kidderminster in 1647. In 1875 the people of Kidderminster honoured their former preacher with a statue, by the famous Worcestershire sculptor Sir Thomas Brock, that originally stood in the Bull Ring. Date: circa 1905

Charles I playing golf at Leith receives news of rebellion

King Charles I, playing golf at Leith, Scotland, receives news of the Irish rebellion which marked the beginning of the Irish Confederate Wars in October 1641. Apparently this did not prevent him from finishing his round. (The story may be a later fabrication.)
