Oil Rig on the river Tees JLP01_08_099192
Graythorp, Hartlepool. An aerial view of tug boats towing the oil platform Graythorp I along the Tees Estuary away from Graythorp.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. Graythorp I had its christening ceremony on June 4th and was launched on Saturday 29th June 1974, heading off for the Forties Oil Field 250 miles away

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view captures the historic moment when tug boats gracefully guide the colossal oil rig, Graythorp I, along the majestic river Tees. The photograph showcases the remarkable engineering feat achieved by Laing Pipelines Offshore in constructing the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the grounds of William Gray Shipyard. During the early 1970s, this site became a hub for innovation as it facilitated the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for BP's ambitious North Sea Oil Project. On June 4th, amidst great anticipation and excitement, Graythorp I was christened before being launched into its destined journey towards Forties Oil Field, located an impressive 250 miles away. The image not only highlights marine engineering prowess but also pays homage to a significant chapter in Hartlepool's industrial history. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination in harnessing natural resources for progress. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring scene from above, we are reminded of how far we have come in our quest for energy exploration and development. This print is a tangible reminder of our ability to shape landscapes and navigate vast bodies of water with precision and skill. Courtesy of A© Historic England Archive, this striking visual encapsulates both beauty and ambition within its frame - showcasing man's relentless pursuit to conquer new frontiers while respecting nature's grandeur.
