Naming day JLP01_09_752265

Graythorp, Hartlepool. A crowd of people gathered at Graythorp for the naming ceremony of the oil platform Graythorp II.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. The oil platform Graythorp I was launched on Saturday 29th June 1974 and on the weekend of 14th-15th June 1975, Graythorp II was named and floated out of the dock basin down the Seaton Channel to where it was handed over to its owners BP

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of marine engineering - the naming ceremony of the oil platform Graythorp II. In the early 1970s, Laing Pipelines Offshore undertook an ambitious project to construct the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the grounds of the old William Gray Shipyard in Hartlepool's Graythorp area. The image showcases a crowd of people gathered at Graythorp, eagerly witnessing this monumental event. The atmosphere is filled with anticipation and excitement as they witness the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. The towering oil rig stands proudly in front, showcasing its grandeur against a backdrop of blue skies. It was on that memorable weekend in June 1975 when Graythorp II was officially named and floated out from its construction site down the Seaton Channel. This marked a major milestone for both Laing Pipelines Offshore and BP, as it symbolized their successful collaboration in constructing state-of-the-art North Sea drilling rigs for BP's ambitious offshore oil project. The significance of this photograph lies not only in its depiction of remarkable engineering achievements but also in capturing a moment that represents progress, innovation, and human endeavor. It serves as a testament to our ability to conquer new frontiers through determination and ingenuity while honoring our industrial heritage.
