EDITORS COMMENTS
Lucretia, probably c. 1539 Artist: Parmigianino (Francesco Mazzola) (1503-1540) Description: This exquisite black chalk drawing by the renowned Mannerist artist Parmigianino, depicts the ancient Roman story of Lucretia. Lucretia, a virtuous Roman matron, was famously raped by Sextus Tarquinius, the son of the Etruscan king, leading to the downfall of the Roman monarchy. This poignant scene captures the moment of her discovery, as she lies naked, her face a study in sorrow and despair. The drawing is a masterful example of Parmigianino's skill in capturing the human form and conveying emotion through line and tone. The artist's use of chiaroscuro, or the interplay of light and dark, adds depth and drama to the image. The drawing is believed to date from around 1539, a time when Parmigianino was at the height of his creative powers. Provenance: This drawing was once part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the powerful ruler of Parma and Piacenza in the 16th century. It was later acquired by the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., where it is now on display as part of their extensive collection of European art. Significance: Lucretia is a powerful symbol of the virtues of chastity, loyalty, and honor, and this drawing is a testament to Parmigianino's ability to capture the depth and complexity of human emotion. The drawing is a valuable addition to the National Gallery of Art's collection, and a reminder of the rich artistic heritage of ancient Rome and the Renaissance period.
