EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 16th century portrait captures Katarina Stenbock (1535-1621), the illustrious Queen of Sweden, in all her regal splendor. Dressed in the finest apparel of the aristocracy, Katarina's attire features a checkered, chequered, or plaid dress, accessorized with a golden chain, gloves, and a bonnet adorned with a delicate netting and a large oval-shaped hat adorned with a feather. The floor beneath her feet is covered in an intricate pattern, adding to the overall grandeur of the scene. Katarina, also known as Catherine Stenbock or Katarina Gustavsdotter Stenbock, was a member of the noble House of Stenbock. She married King Gustav I of Sweden in 1554, becoming the Queen consort of Sweden. In this portrait, she is depicted holding a sceptre and orb, symbols of her royal authority. The painting, created in the oil on canvas technique, showcases the intricate details of Katarina's clothing, from the ruff at her neck to the intricate patterns on her dress. The use of rich colors and the oval shape of the painting are characteristic of the art of the 16th century. The portrait is currently housed in the Nationalmuseum in Sweden, a testament to the country's rich historical heritage.
