EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Jean Sylvain Bailly, a remarkable figure in French history. Born in 1736, Bailly was not only an accomplished astronomer but also a talented writer and politician. His intellectual prowess earned him membership in all three prestigious French academies: the Academie des Sciences, the Academie Francaise, and the Academie des Inscriptions. Bailly's political career flourished during the tumultuous times of the French Revolution. He was elected President of the Third Estate in the Estates-General and later served as Mayor of Paris from 1789 to 1791. However, his fate took a tragic turn when he fell victim to the guillotine on orders from the French Revolutionary Tribunal in November 1793. In this black-and-white portrait engraving, Bailly's profile exudes intelligence and determination. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to his image while highlighting his role as a statesman during one of France's most significant periods of rebellion and change. As both a scientist and politician, Bailly embodied versatility and expertise across various fields. This print serves as a testament to his multifaceted nature—a polymath who made invaluable contributions to astronomy, literature, politics, and society at large. Jean Sylvain Bailly's legacy continues to inspire generations with his unwavering dedication to knowledge-seeking amidst turbulent times—an enduring symbol of intellect entwined with revolutionary spirit.
