Dial Rock, Red Buttes, Laramie Plains, 1874. Creator: John Filmer
Dial Rock, Red Buttes, Laramie Plains, 1874. Rock formation in Wyoming, USA. The far-off Red Buttes are most note-worthy and most picturesque of these; grouped together like giant fortresses, with fantastic towers and walls, they lift ragged edges above the prairie, looking lonely, weird, and strong. Among the singular shapes their masses of stone assume, the strangely-formed and pillar-like Dial Rocks tower up - four columns of worn and scarred sandstone, like the supports of some ruined cromlech built by giants. About them, and, indeed, through the whole region...the country is a barren, unproductive waste. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

Dial Rock, Red Buttes, Laramie Plains, 1874
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that transports viewers to the rugged landscapes of Wyoming in the late 19th century. The photograph captures the awe-inspiring beauty of nature's creations as seen through John Filmer's lens. The focal point of the image is undoubtedly the majestic Red Buttes in the distance. These towering rock formations resemble giant fortresses with their intricate towers and walls, standing proudly against an expansive prairie backdrop. Their ragged edges give them an air of isolation and strength, evoking a sense of wonder and mystery. Amongst these remarkable geological marvels are the Dial Rocks, four worn sandstone columns that rise like pillars from the earth. They bear witness to time's passage with scars etched into their surfaces, reminiscent of ancient ruins crafted by mythical giants. Filmer's composition not only showcases these extraordinary natural wonders but also offers a glimpse into life during this era. A lone rider on horseback traverses the barren plains surrounding Dial Rock—a testament to human resilience amidst harsh conditions. This historic photograph serves as both a visual feast for nature enthusiasts and a valuable historical document capturing America's untamed wilderness in its rawest form. It invites us to appreciate our planet's diverse landscapes while reflecting on our place within it.
