Plate 13. A set of thirty-two constellation cards entitled Urania's Mirror, with a chart of the heavens for the latitude of London (by Jehoshaphat Aspin), all contained within a box depicting Urania, the personification of Astronomy. They were sold as an attractive but educational item, presumably to be used within a domestic setting and reflecting the rising taste for improving pastimes in the later 18th and early 19th century. Created by Sidney Hall as part of a set of thirty-two constellation cards known as 'Urania's Mirror', this piece showcases a chart of the heavens for the latitude of London. The detailed depiction of these celestial figures reflects the growing interest in astronomy during the 19th century.
The image is not just visually striking but also educational, intended for domestic use to promote learning about the stars and constellations. Sold alongside Aspin's 'Familiar Treatise on Astronomy', this set was designed to be both attractive and informative.
Intricate details such as eagles, bows and arrows, dolphins, and mythical creatures adorn this piece, adding a touch of fantasy to its scientific subject matter. The vibrant colors bring these celestial beings to life against a backdrop of stars and galaxies.
