Coloured engraving by an unknown artist. Published by J Pitts, London, 21 February 1812.
The capture of the border fortresses of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz was essential before Wellington could advance into Spain. On 8 January 1812 he laid siege to Ciudad Rodrigo and by 19 January his guns had opened two gaps in the defences of the town. That night, the 3rd Division attacked one breach while the Light Division assaulted the other. The 3rd Division suffered heavily from the explosion of a huge mine, which can be seen in this engraving, but the Light Division forced their way into the town while other troops succeeded in scaling the walls elsewhere. Attacked from all sides, the French surrendered. The capture of Ciudad Rodrigo was followed by several hours of drunkenness and looting by British soldiers.); eNational Army Museum; out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dramatic scene of the siege and storming of Ciudad Rodrigo in Spain on January 19,1812. The colored engraving, created by an unknown artist and published by J Pitts in London, depicts a pivotal moment during the Peninsular War. The image showcases the intense battle as British troops lay siege to Ciudad Rodrigo, one of two border fortresses that needed to be captured before Wellington could advance further into Spain. By January 19th, Wellington's guns had successfully breached the town's defenses at two points. In this engraving, we can see the devastating explosion caused by a massive mine that heavily impacted the soldiers from the 3rd Division. Despite facing significant challenges, including casualties from explosions and fierce resistance from French forces defending their positions, British troops managed to infiltrate Ciudad Rodrigo through various means. The Light Division successfully stormed one breach while other units scaled walls elsewhere. The capture of Ciudad Rodrigo was a crucial victory for Wellington's army and marked a turning point in their campaign against Napoleon's forces in Spain. However, it is worth noting that after securing victory, some British soldiers succumbed to hours of drunkenness and looting within the town. This historical artwork provides us with a glimpse into this important event during the Peninsular War and highlights both bravery on the battlefield and its aftermath.
