In 1638 Murad IV, Sultan of Turkey, marched into Persia at the head of a vast Turkish army, and on 15 November commenced to besiege Baghdad. The fortifications of the city were strong, the garrison consisted of thirty thousand men, and the Persian governor was brave and resolute. Although the Turks encountered a desperate resistance their numbers and discipline prevailed and Baghdad fell on 24 December.
