EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the aftermath of the devastating fire that consumed the Training Ship Wellesley on the River Tyne at North Shields, Northumberland, in 1914. The Wellesley had been the base for the charitable institution established in 1874 by local businessmen, including James Hall, to provide shelter and training for Tyneside waifs and young men for naval service. The institution, which was originally known as the Wellesley Nautical School, was a vital source of support for those growing up in poverty and offered essential skills and transport to the navy. The origins of the charity can be traced back to the 1860s when the local workhouses were overflowing, and there was a pressing need for a more effective solution to address the plight of the area's orphans and destitute youth. The Wellesley, which was moored on the Tyne, provided a home and a sense of community for these young men, offering them the opportunity to learn valuable skills and work towards a career in the navy. The fire, which broke out in the early hours of the morning, caused widespread destruction, reducing the ship to a smoldering wreck. Despite the tragic loss, the spirit of the institution and its supporters remained unbroken. The Wellesley Nautical School was rebuilt, and the young men were housed ashore, continuing their training and eventually going on to serve in the navy. This historical photograph is a poignant reminder of the resilience of the community and the importance of charitable institutions in providing support and opportunities for those in need during the Victorian era.
