Emperor of Abyssinia and his family exiled in jerusalem. The Emperor of Abyssinia

Emperor of Abyssinia and his family exiled in jerusalem.
The Emperor of Abyssinia with the Empress Mannen and members of their family have gone into exile with the Ethiopian colony in Jerusalem.
This colony is probably the largest group of Abyssinians abroad, having its own churches and institutions. Haile Selassie and his family have always been much interested in this outpost of their Empire. The Empress paid a visit in 1933, little dreaming that the Royal House would seek refuge in the Holy City from a foreign invader.
Photo shows, the new Ethiopian Church and convent on the banks of the River Jordan. It was built at the expense of the Empress

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the Emperor of Abyssinia and his family exiled in Jerusalem. The Emperor, Haile Selassie, along with Empress Mannen and their extended family sought refuge within the Ethiopian colony located in Jerusalem during a time of foreign invasion. The Ethiopian colony in Jerusalem stands as the largest group of Abyssinians residing abroad, boasting its own churches and institutions. This outpost has always held great importance to Haile Selassie and his family, who have shown immense interest in its development over the years. In fact, Empress Mannen had previously visited this sacred city back in 1933, unaware that it would later become their sanctuary from external threats. The photograph showcases the newly constructed Ethiopian Church and convent situated on the serene banks of the River Jordan. It serves as a testament to Empress Mannen's dedication towards preserving her faith even while living far away from home. The image is captured using monochrome techniques which add depth and emotion to this historical moment. Preserved by TopFoto. co. uk, this remarkable photograph allows us to glimpse into an era between wars when Ethiopia faced turmoil but found solace within their religious community established overseas. It serves as a reminder of resilience amidst adversity and highlights how individuals can find strength through unity even when forced into exile.
