Preserved body of the Pazyryk Ice Maiden

Ice Maiden. Preserved skull of the Pazyryk " Ice Maiden", a young woman found frozen in ice on the Ukok plain in the Altai mountains of central Asia. The body is about 2500 years old and some parts are so well preserved that tattoos can still be seen on her skin. She was preserved because water seeped into her burial chamber and then froze. A silk dress, an elaborate headdress, gilded ornaments, a hand mirror of polished metal, and sacrificial animals had been buried with her, suggesting that she had a high rank amongst the nomadic Pazyryk people. The " Ice Maiden" was discovered in 1993 by a Russian team led by Natalaya Polosmak
