Mosquito larva, light micrograph

Mosquito larva. Polarised light micrograph of the body of a larva of an Anopheles sp. mosquito. The larva lies parallel to the waters surface. At the end of the abdomen (left) is a long breathing siphon with an end spiracle. This is in contact with the air, to take in oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. The body is divided into 8 segments, with a dark central tubular gut and muscles (yellow lines). The swelling behind the head is the thorax. The head has a pair of compound eyes, pair of antennae and a pair of feeding brushes on the upper lip (labrum) which beat to cause a current to flow towards the mouth, which then filters out any food particles. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across
