1731 Johann Scheuchzer Hairy Esau Bible

1731 Physica Sacra (Sacred Physics) by Johann Scheuchzer (1672-1733) " Hairy Esau" folio copper engraving drawn by a team of engravers under the direction of Johann Andreas Pfeffel (1674-1748). The goal of Scheuchzers work was to use the best contemporary science to illuminate the biblical account of human history in a sequence of 745 plates. Here he compares and contrasts Esaus hairiness with that of an ape (probably an orangutan, the south east asian ape that was the first to be described in Europe). At the time there was little doubt that science (physica) supported the literal truth of the Biblical chronology of creation and history. The prospect of hairy homo sylvestre " wild men" had also fascinated natural historians including Gaspar Schott, Topsell and Gessner

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and thought-provoking "Hairy Esau" folio copper engraving from Johann Scheuchzer's renowned 1731 Physica Sacra. With a team of skilled engravers under the guidance of Johann Andreas Pfeffel, Scheuchzer aimed to merge contemporary science with biblical narratives through an extensive series of 745 plates. In this particular illustration, Scheuchzer delves into the fascinating comparison between Esaus' hairiness and that of an ape, potentially an orangutan - one of Southeast Asia's great apes which had recently been introduced to Europe. During this era, there existed little doubt among scholars that scientific findings (physica) unequivocally supported the literal truth behind Biblical chronology and history. The concept of "wild men" or hairy homo sylvestre, had long captivated natural historians such as Gaspar Schott, Topsell, and Gessner. This artwork beautifully captures their curiosity by juxtaposing Esaus' hairy appearance with that of an ape. It serves as a testament to both human evolution and creationism while exploring themes surrounding human origins. Paul D. Stewart masterfully presents this historical masterpiece in his photo print, offering viewers a glimpse into the intersectionality between science and religion during the 18th century. The image not only highlights Scheuchzer's artistic prowess but also invites contemplation on topics like Edenic creation, Genesis narratives, primate ancestry, and the ongoing discourse between science and religious beliefs.
